Enforced disappearances Colombia

Numbers and Context
UNWGEID Cases
1,225 cases reported, 268 clarified, 957 outstanding.
NGOs Numbers
Over 3,000 disappearances and killings since 2002 only according to the Report 2007 by Amnesty International
Context
Most of cases denounced to the working group happened in 1981 by members of paramilitary groups with the complicity of members of the security forces. Victims included members of trade unions, peasants and community workers. According to the Amnesty International Report 2007 there have been more than 3,000 disappearances and killings since 2002. However the UNWGEID has only received one new case of enforced disappearance in the last reviewed period (2007) which could be a sign that that disappearances are no longer occurring in Colombia, rather than being the effect of the phenomenon of underreporting noted in the report of the country visit in 2005.
