In Lebanon the "forced disappearance" was systematically practised during the civil war (1975-1990) by the militias and Syrian and Israeli armies. This practice
continued during the occupation by the two armies.

Thus, thousands of Lebanese have disappeared.

In many cases where mass abductions took place, it is likely that most of the victims had been executed in Lebanon. However, it also appears that some of the
victims of kidnappings, singly or mass, was later handed over to Israeli and Syrian authorities. Among them some have been killed and buried in Israel and Syria and others been transferred to prisons in the two countries. Currently, hundreds of Lebanese are still in detention, incommunicado and in inhumane conditions in Syrian prisons. 17 years after the conflict ended, and while the Israeli and Syrian armies have withdrawn from Lebanon, no serious investigation has been conducted to clarify the fate of the thousands of people. Yet the families of those who have "disappeared" are fighting for years to get answers from the Lebanese authorities. [...]
