International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance

On December 20th, 2006, the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons form Enforced Disappearances was adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations. With the Convention and the subsequent ratification by at least 20 Sates, a new instrument, a tool to eradicate disappearances will come into force.
Abstract:
The different steps that lead to the adoption of the Convention in 2006 with the relevant documents that have been produced and published from 1981 onwards. Including the 1992 Declaration and the Manfred Novak report of 2001.
The convention contains several new human rights, a clear definition as well as innovative provisions that provide for better prevention, protection, reparation and prosecution of enforced disappearances. To be able to promote the convention it is important to understand the basic framework of the convention and the important articles and provisions.
