Context
As reported by the UNWGEID the majority of the 53 cases of disappearances occurred in Bujumbura in 1991, after attacks against the Government in the capital and north-west provinces. Disappearances also happened in 1994 in Bujumbura again. Most of the victims were of Hutu origin.
Disappearances have been happening at least since 1965 and although acknowledged, many enforced disappearances are still occurring, according to local organisations like Ligue Iteka.
