The International Convention against Enforced Disappearances Enters into Force Today- Aim for human rights explains the Convention on Youtube.
Entry into vigour
The Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearances enters into force today. This legally binding human rights treaty was adopted in December 2006. With Iraq depositing its ratification instruments to the Secretary General of the United Nations past 23rd of November, the number of ratifications reached the threshold of 20 required for the entry into force of the convention, agreed to start one month after the 20th ratification.
Brazil ratified shortly after Iraq, bringing the number of States that are becoming party to this convention today to 21: Albania, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Chile, Cuba, Ecuador, France, Germany, Honduras, Iraq, Japan, Kazakhstan, Mali, Mexico, Nigeria, Paraguay, Senegal, Spain, and Uruguay.
Entry into force means that the obligations contracted under this convention become binding for the State-parties as from today. These States shall start today with introducing a number of legislative and other measures at the domestic level. The Entry into force of this convention also allows to announce the creation - six months from now - of a Committee on Enforced Disappearances of 10 experts who will monitor the compliance of States with the obligations they are contracting under this convention.
“The entry into force of this legal instrument carries the hope that humanity will succeed in eradicating this terrible crime. We should however always recall that we owe the protection that this convention will offer to the desaparecidos themselves and to the struggle of their relatives worldwide”, says Ewoud Plate of the programme Linking Solidarity, dealing with enforced disappearances at Aim for human rights.
67 other States have signed this convention and should be encouraged to ratify it soon.
