After the International Day of the Disappeared
Last Monday 30th of August the International Day of the Disappeared was widely celebrated around the world.
This International day is about to become an officially recognised commemoration, now that the Human rights Council adopted a resolution to this effect in June this year. The event took a particular dimension this year for two reasons:
- The human rights defender Patricio Rice, advisor to FEDEFAM and close ally of the Madres de plaza de mayo, who died recently, was remembered on many of these events. Patricio had just been appointed as new focal point for the International Coalition against Enforced Disappearances (www.icaed.org), a broad coalition of victims associations and civil-society organisations campaigning for the ratification of the Convention.
- The number of ratifications of the International Convention for the Protection of all People against Enforced Disappearances reached the number of 19 on the 3rd of August with the ratification from Paraguay. This means that its entry into vigour is imminent since 20 ratifications are needed for this treaty to entry into force.
Communications, press releases, films, memory events, and other actions and activities were realized on this day in commemoration of those that were and remain disappeared by their governments. Families and friends of the victims, now activists for the defence of human rights, joined around the world to call on States to immediately stop this violation and protect their citizens. Linking Solidarity has collected information about these activities from different parts of the world, which we are posting here.
