Human Rights Council Discusses reports on Countering Terrorism, Torture and Involuntary and Enforced Disappareances

On the past 10 of March the Human Rights Council held an interactive dialogue on the reports of Martin Scheinin, the Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of human rights while countering terrorism; Manfred Nowak, the Special Rapporteur on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment; and Santiago Corcuera, the Chairperson of the Working Group on enforced or involuntary disappearances. Country delegations raised a number of issues, such as the challenges presented by human rights violations like torture, extraordinary renditions and prolonged detention which showed that the current protection measures for victims of counter-terrorism measures that violated human rights were insufficient and needed to be strengthened.
