Sri Lanka: UN Human Rights Council adopts Resolution

The Human Rights Council adopted a resolution on the situation in Sri Lanka that focuses mainly on abuses committed by the LTTE.

The Human Rights Council continued yesterday morning (27th May) its eleventh Special Session on the situation of human rights in Sri Lanka. Again speakers expressed divergent views on the approach which should be taken towards Sri Lanka in the aftermath of the bloody conflict in the north of the country. Enforced disappearances and torture remained a problem. A resolution on the situation in Sri Lanka was adopted by 29 votesin favor.

The human rights organisation Human Rights Watch considers that the UN Human Rights Council has failed the victims as it “ignores calls for an international investigation into alleged abuses during recent fighting and other pressing human rights concerns”. Read further
