UN remembers Algeria’s disappeared
The UN committee responsible for the application of the international convention against torture is asking Algeria to "send it as quickly as possible a list of the people who disappeared during the 1990s".
According to the statistics cited during Algeria’s appearance in front of the committee, meeting in Geneva under the presidency of the Chilean expert, Claudio Grossman, the number of disappeared is 6146, but their identieis have not yet been published.
The Committee has also asked Algeria to "spontanously set up enquiries bypassing the need for individuals to lodge complaints". This is being done to shed light on the fate of those who disappeared, to identify them and to follow and punish those involved in enforced disappearances and to adequately compensate the families of the missing"
