Enforced disappearances Philippines
| Numbers and Context |
|---|
| UNWGEID Cases |
| 774 disappearances have been denounced, from which 159 have been clarified and 615 remain outstanding. |
| NGOs Numbers |
| 1846 according to the organisation FIND (Families of victims of Involuntary Disappearances). |
| Context |
| Most of the disappearances have their origin in the counter-insurgency operations against New People's Army (NPA), the Moro Islamis Liberation Front (MILF) and other Muslim secessionists groups. The majority of cases have taken place during the 70s and 80s, but they have continued occurred since the 90s until now.
In the latest report published by the human rights organisation Kataparan the number of enforced disappearances since January 2001 to December 2007 sums up to 185 cases. In this report it can be seen a decrease in the number of enforced disappearances in 2007 (22 cases) in comparison to the numbers collected in 2006 (60 cases). Acording to Kataparan this decrease is due to the "calls for justice by victims of human rights violations (HRVs), people’s organizations, NGOs and individual human rights defenders nationwide". Additionally the political pressure exerted by the international community, especially those who responded to the Stop the Killings! international campaign. |
